Chapter 7 bankruptcy provides for liquidation of an individual or couple's unsecured debts, meaning if you file for Chapter 7 bankruptcy most if not all of your debts can be completely forgiven in a bankruptcy discharge. As a single-filer in New York state, you are allowed to keep certain personal property including $50k worth of equity in a homestead ($100k if filing jointly), automobiles you own outright, home furnishings, and other personal property.
